Yoga What Else?

Yoga? That’s a fancy word for stretching, right?

I haven’t always been into yoga.

Touching my toes was a hilarious concept. At least 25 years had passed since I’d been upside down in an attempt to stand on my head.

Despite that, I somehow decided to give this yoga thing a go.

I lived and travelled to different places before settling down in the UK 15 years ago. It took me two Masters degrees in Economics and International business and several years at the office desk to realise that the corporate world is not for me. I love the sun, sea and mangoes. And I like to wander. These were all pretty good prerequisites to quit my job and off to the world.

I first explored yoga during my travels in Asia, Bali, New Zealand, and Costa Rica. While travelling, I tried different Hatha, Ashtanga or Jivamukti styles. But it was in my early thirties when I was seeking some relief for lower back pain. Back pain, caused by an office job and long hours driving. That was when I discovered the immense benefits of hot yoga. Since then, I have been a dedicated practitioner ever since.

A few years later, I found myself in Nepal, doing 200 hrs Hatha and Ashtanga TT with the Akshi Yogashala school from Rishikesh, India. More training followed: Hot Yoga TT in Cambridge and Yin Yoga TT with Norman Blair in London. Classes, workshops, training with inspirational teachers around the world. Forever student, here I am today, still giving it a go.

“It is through the alignment of the body that I discovered the alignment of my mind, self, and intelligence.” ~ BKS. Iyengar

Classes

I emphasise correct physical alignment and understanding of the uniqueness of each person body. By studying anatomy within the yoga poses, we can achieve a better alignment and safer practice.

Classes are focused on mindful use of breath and a more profound sense of self-awareness. This self-awareness allows students to explore their physical limits safely and arrive at a comfortable and safe posture, reminding them to be grounded and respectful of their limitations through their practice.

Open Hatha Yoga

Our traditional Hatha Yoga class is suitable for all ages and levels of experience. A blend of classic postures, deep stretching and calming breath, relax the body and de-stress the mind.

Our classes create strength and flexibility in the body and effort and surrender in each asana.

In our classes, we give particular attention to the correct breath, the alignment of your spine and variations of postures and adaptations to the individual.

Classes tend to have a slower pace and postures held for a more extended period than in more ‘flowing’ styles, leaving you feeling looser, refreshed, and relaxed.

Hatha Flow Yoga

Hatha flow is a more dynamic approach to asana practice, firmly rooted in Hatha Yoga traditions but uses progressive sequencing to open up the body deeply, cultivates the energy and focuses on alignment and breath. It usually starts with warm-ups of sun salutations flow, standing/seated, and floor-based asanas and variations on those which will sequence into stronger, more challenging ones, including balancing poses and inversions, to develop strength and flexibility and culminates in a final relaxation session.

Slow Flow Yoga

An accessible, Hatha based, gentle flow class that integrates breath and slow movement. This style usually provides poses that range from gentle to challenging but done with stable, self-centring energy.

The pace of these classes is understandably slower and focuses on safe alignment and maintaining balanced, slow breathing.

However, the toned-down speed of these classes does not mean that the poses are any less beneficial for building strength, stability, and postural integrity than other styles.

Hot Yoga

How about doing a series of 26 postures in 38-degree heat? Yes, it’s hot, and it’s sweaty!

Practising Hot yoga sequence in a heated room will increase your heart rate, helps to detoxify your body while developing strength and increasing flexibility. The intense focus on breath improves the control of breath and will help your body to relax, calm and focus your mind. With a strong emphasis on correct postural alignment, it’s an excellent series for correcting postural aches and pains and increasing the overall health of your spine.
